PDR Travels to a Not So Faraway Beach to Battle
PDR fought both rain and the clock to take part of the 2014 AIA Sandcastle Competition on East Beach in Galveston. Saturday, May 31st, the PDR team joined 60 plus architectural and design firms to master the art of sand sculpting. Team members gathered and worked for five hours along the beachfront to complete the final design.
PDR’s design was inspired by the announcement of a new sequel to the classic movie “Star Wars”. The team added a Galveston-centric twist and decided that the design should feature two starfish battling with lightsabers, thus creating a beach remake of the iconic film.
PDR’s sand-shoveling, water-hauling, carvers this year included: Aaron Beltran, Amanda Haas, Bridgett Weaver, Diana McGroary, Garner Pagel, Holley Haney, Julio Rodriguez, Matthew Crnkovich, Nicholas Jackson, Patrick Lamb, Peter Fisher, Thomas Le, and Tristan Grimble. The team also enlisted help from a few Brochsteins Inc. employees, as well as associated family and friends.
Although PDR did not take home the victory, the design made a strong showing and gained the appreciation of spectators. “We knew there would be stiff competition in the category we choose, but our design was strong and execution was great,” said Peter Fisher, PDR Principal. As always, the competition proved to be another fun social and team-building event for PDR employees.
Since 1986, the Houston chapter of American Institute of Architects has been hosting one of the world’s largest sandcastle competition sandcastle events created for design, architectural, and engineering professionals.
