Top 4 Lessons from the 2016 ACMP Conference and HR Symposium

By Kelly Baughman and Amy Becker

It’s conference season and we are absorbing every word!  Last month, we attended the 25th Annual Gulf Coast HR Symposium in Houston and the 7th Annual Global Association of Change Management Professionals conference in Dallas.  Both conferences were educational and inspiring.  Here are our top four learnings through the lens of change management:

  1. Emotional contagion exists.  This means that things like negativity are as contagious as an exaggerated yawn!  Remember that what you emote will come back, so stay positive in spite of project challenges.  Spread the enthusiasm, not the negativity.  The results are your reward.

  2. Stories have incredible power to build understanding.  We are neuro-biologically wired for story.  In fact, in the absence of data – we will always make up a story.  When managing a change, pepper the change message with good data and avoid the pitfalls of rumors and false truths!

  3. In this economy, your challenge is to take what is unique about you and make it useful.  Everyone is looking for fresh approaches to common problems.  In a constantly changing workplace – innovative thinking is key.

  4. Everyone loves a game.  Games are a fun way to reinforce a new behavior or work pattern.  You will be surprised how engaged your employees become when you bring a little friendly competition into the mix.  Tip: make your game easy to understand and impossible to avoid.

  5. Read these two books for the newest thinking on happiness and strength.  Apply that wisdom to everything you do!

    1. Brene Brown, Rising Strong

    2. Shawn Achor, The Happiness Advantage

Both Amy and Kelly recently presented at the 2016 Gulf Coast HR Symposium on Return on Investment to Return on Performance and will be leading a webinar on the topic this August. For more information on the upcoming webinar, please contact us.
